PLM Maturity Definition - Standard

Introduction

The PLMIG PLM Maturity Workshop hosted by PSA Peugeot Citroën in Paris at the end of 2006 showed that there is a future state of Full PLM Maturity that it should be possible to achieve.

This shows that PLM does not have to be a "never-ending quest".  It is possible to implement PLM fully and to achieve a dynamic but stable state.

It depends not just on advances in PLM understanding, but also on collaboration and development of standards within the PLM industry.   Nevertheless, Full PLM Maturity is possible and is therefore the end point that should be planned towards.

Application

The concept of Full PLM Maturity changes a PLM implementation from a "never-ending journey" to something that can be planned towards.

The PLM Maturity Definition should be kept in mind by the PLM team and embedded into an organisation's PLM Vision if the long-term implementation is ever to reach completion.

 PLM Maturity Definition

"Full PLM Maturity is the state in which all of the elements that are currently being developed as part of PLM are in place across the entire enterprise, wherever they are applicable to that enterprise.

The whole enterprise manages its products actively and seamlessly from the executive board down to the most detailed operational level, and with commercial integration to customers, suppliers and partner companies. Everybody within the enterprise understands and supports PLM, and knows how their work interacts with the PLM environment.

Product-related data across the whole lifecycle is created once and presented as information to the right people in the right format and detail at the right time. Knowledge about the products is captured, shared and re-used in an effective way.

People, processes and technology are integrated within the PLM framework and the PLM environment is supported by a comprehensive IT infrastructure."

The detailed method of calculating the PLM Maturity of an organisation is set out in the PLM Maturity Reference Manual, and will be evolved into a formal PLM standard as part of the current initiative.
