PLM Best Practice Definition - Standard

Introduction

Although there are widespread examples of good practice and advanced development within current implementations of PLM, these cannot yet be said to be "Best Practice" because no parameters or metrics exist against which Best Practice can be measured.

PLMIG initiatives may generate these, but in the meantime there is a standard definition for the concept set that can be used for guidance.

Application

Unlike PLM Maturity (which is a state), PLM Best Practice is an attitude and a way of working.

The PLM Best Practice Definition below is the high-level starting point for a correct understanding of the concept.

Definition

 PLM Best Practice

"PLM Best Practice is the well-informed, well-supported and effective implementation of PLM throughout the extended enterprise, planned through to completion.

It is the clearly-defined way of working or course of action that other PLM experienced PLM practitioners would independently agree, if they were placed in the same situation within the same environment, should be followed in order to achieve the best results.

From the CEO to the temporary staff:-

  • Everyone has the same unified view of what PLM is
  • PLM is applied to its full extent across the whole enterprise, including the extended collaboration chain
  • PLM is supported by a comprehensive and completely integrated IT infrastructure
  • PLM is fully integrated with other business applications and improvement initiatives
  • everyone recognises the value and benefits of PLM"
